Everybody in England knows all about the 44 years of hurt suffered by fans of the national team.
To many football supporters they are like the partner you can't live with but can't live without. Good - great - players, outstanding for their clubs but infected with some kind of stage fright or blind panic when they pull on the shirt for their country.
The situation is hardly helped by the fact that the English FA have shelled out around£12million in wages to foreign coaches over the best part of the last decade.
When they did give the job to an Englishman, Steve McClaren set about destroying the good reputation he had had in the game and made himself the Wally With The Brolly.
