Leicester have offered to make Edgar Davids their highest-paid player on £30,000 a week to tempt him out of retirement.
Championship City are in talks with former Milan, Juventus, Tottenham and Holland international midfielder Davids about a shock move to the Walkers Stadium.
Davids, 36, was believed to be in the crowd on Tuesday night to see Nigel Pearson’s side beat Crystal Palace 2-0.
And Foxes owner Milan Mandaric is prepared to smash the club’s pay structure to accommodate Davids, who has been without a club since leaving Ajax last summer.
Mandaric said: “If we couldn’t afford him we wouldn’t be talking to him. We are a very ambitious club, our supporters are very ambitious.
“We are progressing and it is exciting. That’s what our manager wants and our supporters want.
“We already have a competitive and talented squad and team but there is always room for improvement and people with that kind of profile like Edgar will probably help us.”
Leicester’s top earners are Matt Oakley and Steve Howard who both pick up around £12,000 a week but Davids will earn considerably more if he joins.
