1968: Keegan begins his playing career at Scunthorpe United.
1971: He joins Division One side Liverpool in 1971, going on to win three First Division titles, two UEFA Cups, two FA Cups and the European Cup.
1972: He gains his first of 63 England caps.
1977: Keegan moves to German top-flight club Hamburger SV in the summer.
1978/9: He is crowned Footballer of the Year in both 1978 and 1979, winning the Bundesliga title in the 1978-79 season, and reaching the European Cup final the following year.
1980: Keegan moves to Southampton.
1982: He transfers to secondtier Newcastle United, helping Newcastle to promotion in his debut season.
1984: He retires from football in 1984, having been capped 63 times for England, scoring 21 goals.
1992: Keegan takes his first steps into management at Newcastle United, again returning the club to the top-flight, as champions of the second tier.
1996: Keegan's Newcastle finish second in the Premier League in the 1995-96 season.
1997: He leaves the club.
1998: He takes charge of Fulham.
1999: Keegan lands the England manager's job but resigns in the autumn of 2000, following a loss against Germany in World Cup qualification.
2001: Manchester City appoint him manager where he stays for four years before resigning in 2005.
January 2008: Keegan takes charge of Newcastle for a second stint after nearly three years out of the game. But his ill-fated return lasts just eight months.
