Lille chairman Michel Seydoux claims the French side may be unable to afford to sign Joe Cole permanently in the summer.
Seydoux would like to buy Cole and the former England midfielder has been a success during his season-long loan spell from Liverpool.
Cole claims he would like to stay, but the Ligue 1 club may struggle to match his £90,000-a-week salary at Anfield.
"Joe Cole has spoken and I thought it was great," said Seydoux. "It's rare that an English player comes to France and says he wants to continue.
“A discussion has been held. I do not make money. You must be reasonable. We'll see when we will make the main decisions."
