Steven Gerrard last night told Liverpool fans: “It’s no time to panic.”
Kopites are reeling from the club’s worst cup defeat since 1959 on top of their poor start to the Premier League.
Gerrard understands the fans’ deep frustrations and appealed to them to stick with the team.
“There’s a bit of doom and gloom about that goes with a few negative results,” said the Reds skipper.
“We’ve had them against Manchester United and going out against Northampton. But we’ve only had one seventh of the season, so it’s crazy to panic.
“The important thing is to stay together. Two or three good, positive results will change the mood, lifts the cloud and then everyone will be looking forward again.
“I don’t think you can judge your position in the league until you’ve played 10 or 12 games. Yeah, we have five points and have already lost a couple of games, but if we string three wins together in this league, you’re back in there for the European places.
“Let’s just take a deep breath and assess the situation 10 or 12 games in.”
Gerrard is looking beyond the Northampton defeat and claims he can see encouraging signs.
“Of course it’s been a tough week,” said the England star. “But I’m looking at the big picture. There has been a change of manager, a change of coaching staff, also physical as well as technical and it’s going to take time to get the new ideas and methods over to the lads.
“So the message from me to the Liverpool supporters and the people out there is just be patient a bit longer and I’m sure the picture will brighten up in the coming weeks.”

Steven Gerrard appeared at St Margaret’s School in Liverpool to launch adiStars, a new initiative from adidas.
As a major London 2012 sponsor, adidas has created adiStars as part of their commitment to increasing sports participation in the build-up to the Games and beyond. In creating adiStars, adidas worked with young people to ensure the content was right for young people.
The more you take part in sporting ‘missions’, the more rewards you earn from adidas.
Gerrard said: “You see programmes on TV about kids being overweight and a campaign like this in the run-up to the Olympics gets them involved. And if you are involved in any kind of sport, it helps you stay in good shape.”
adidas is the Official Sportswear Partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
