Fernando Torres will miss Liverpool's pre-season campaign after scans revealed he has ruptured a muscle in his left thigh.
The Spanish FA discovered the extent of the injury when their medical team examined Torres in a Madrid clinic.
A statement on the Spanish FA's website said Torres had a magnetic resonance scan at the Cemtro de Madrid Clinic, which showed he suffered "a grade one muscle fibre rupture in the left thigh" during his country's World Cup Final win over Holland on Sunday.
Liverpool are flying out their own medical staff to Madrid to organise Torres' rehab and the club expects the striker, who is wanted by Chelsea, back at Melwood at the start of next month.
Sources in Spain claim Torres is doubtful for Liverpool's first Premier League game against Arsenal on August 15.
However Liverpool will be relieved his injury is not too serious and they initially feared he might be out for up to eight weeks.
