Alberto Aquilani's permanent switch to Juventus could be in doubt after a club official said they would not pay the agreed price of £16m for the Italian.
Kop flop Aquilani joined Liverpool from Roma in 2009 but struggled badly in his first season with injuries and form.
He then joined Juventus on a season-long loan and has often said he would be keen on a permanent move to the Serie A side.
But the move could now be in jeopardy after Juve’s general manager Giuseppe Marotta said the club would not be prepared to pay the €18m fee agreed with Liverpool when the loan move was agreed.
Marotta told Sky Sport Italia: “There is a buy-out clause that has to be activated by May 15.
“We’ll try to reach an agreement before the deadline. I can certainly say we will not sign Aquilani for the sum set by Liverpool.”
