Liverpool have joined Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan in the transfer scramble for Roma defender Philippe Mexes.
The French international has Europe’s top clubs on red alert as his contract with Roma expires in June.
Centre-half Mexes has refused a new deal with Roma and Liverpool’s newly-promoted director of football Damien Comolli believes he can lure him to Anfield despite the competition.
Comolli believes Mexes, who was a target for Gerard Houllier when he was at Anfield, can stiffen Liverpool’s back line and is championing his signing with the club’s US owners.
The Reds have the cash for an attractive package to lure the experienced stopper, who is 29 on Wednesday.
Caretaker boss Kenny Dalglish is an admirer, but is understood to favour Bolton’s Gary Cahill.
