In his first interview as a Liverpool player this week, Joe Cole hinted that he had been told, during negotiations, that other stars would be brought into Anfield this summer to ensure that the squad is strengthened.
And he insisted that the new players, alongside the club’s existing talent, makes Liverpool an exciting prospect…especially is Torres commits, as expected, when he returns to training next week.
Joe Cole: Torres will stay and we can win honours together
“I jumped on board because with the players we have here and the players we are looking to bring in, it’s definitely going in the right direction,” he said.
Liverpool have some money to spend, but boss Roy Hodgson can expand his transfer kitty by selling Javier Mascherano to Inter Milan.
Talks are due to get underway for the unsettled Argentine within the next few days, and if Liverpool can get around £30m for the international star, they will have enough to buy a replacement and a big name forward.
They have been linked with AC Milan striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, with reports in Italy suggesting that a deal is moving closer for the Dutch international.
There are suggestions that Liverpool will be prepared to swap Ryan Babel for his World Cup final team-mate, but it is more likely to he a straight cash deal.
Hodgson will also bring in at least one left back, cover at right back and another left sided utility man, with Fulham defender Paul Konchesky and Villa’s Luke Young likely to figure in deliberations.
Hodgson also wants to carry on the good work of recent months in signing exciting young talent, and he has looked at Stromsgodset’s promising striker Marcus Pedersen.
