Big-spending Manchester City have made a stunning £18million move for England full-back Glen Johnson.
City are preparing to blow Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham out of the water with another incredible deal for the Portsmouth defender.
Chelsea were hopeful of completing a deal to take 24-year-old Johnson back to Stamford Bridge within the next fortnight.
But City boss Mark Hughes has come in with a package Portsmouth and Johnson will find hard to resist.
City's Arab owners are prepared to outbid Roman Abramovich and will also give Johnson a £100,000-a-week contract and Portsmouth are now preparing to sell.
Johnson's performance for England against Andorra will only increase the demand but City's offer may also make him sacrifice Champions League football.
But Johnson's former Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard has pleaded with the England defender to return to Stamford Bridge.
Lampard said: "He is a fantastic player. Everyone knows about his ability going forwards.
"He was a fantastic player when he left Chelsea, and has really come on now.
"You forget how young he is because he moved to us at a young age.
"He is top drawer."
