Emmanuel Adebayor has warned Chelsea and Manchester United that Manchester City will be title contenders next season.
Adebayor is targeting a top-three finish and believes the Blues can compete with Chelsea and United for the Premier League.
The City striker isn’t bothered by their tough start to the season against Tottenham and Liverpool and claims they can put down a marker in those games.
Roberto Mancini has already splashed out £59million this summer on David Silva, Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng to strengthen City and Adebayor claims they are improving all the time.
“Fifth place last season was OK, but we want to do better than that this time and we’re looking for the top three,” said Adebayor speaking during City’s US tour.
“The start to the season is very important in many ways. If we go to Tottenham and get a good result and then do the same against Liverpool, it will be great for the confidence and show the guys that we are title contenders.
“It’s a difficult start to the season, but it’s good for us in the sense that we can send a message out.
“If we are going to win the title, we should not be concerned about how the fixtures fall.”
City fans, famed for their pessimism, seem to share Adebayor’s confidence and they have bought season tickets in record numbers.
Mancini is determined to hit the ground running in his first full season with City and sees their American tour as pivotal to their preparations.
The Italian, known for being a tough taskmaster, has been working his players hard on the first leg of their tour at Nike’s state-of-the-art HQ in Portland, Oregon.
Adebayor, 26, who bagged 14 league goals in 26 appearances last season, claims Blues fans will see the benefit of all their graft when they kick-off the new campaign at White Hart Lane on August 14.
“This is a perfect chance for us to get some hard work done as a group and we have some great facilities in the United States,” said the Togo star.
“The facilities we have at the Nike HQ in Portland are spectacular and we have some exciting games against big teams whilst we are in the United States. There is great anticipation among the players about the coming season.”
