Published 23:02 15/03/11 By David McDonnell
It was a nervy affair, but injury-hit Manchester United beat Marseille to claim a place in the last eight of the Champions League . But who were the best and worst performers on the night? Here, MirrorFootball's David McDonnell gives his ratings...
Edwin van der Sar - Never seriously troubled but alert and decisive, notably just after the break to gather the ball ahead of Gignac. 7
John O'Shea - Customary diligence and reliability until he pulled up with a hamstring strain on 36 minutes to end his night. 6
Chris Smalling - A revelation this season but looked unsure alongside Brown, whose own shortcomings did little to help. 6
Wes Brown - Filling the void left by Vidic, and his rustiness showed. A liability, highlighted by own goal on 83 minutes. 5
Patrice Evra - Usual surging runs down the left, but often took the wrong option when in attack. Aggressive in defence. 6
Paul Scholes - The man dubbed “Sat-Nav” by his team-mates was unable dictate play with his range of long-passing. 6
Michael Carrick - Neat on the ball but spent most of the match as a buffer in front of the back-four, doing nothing of note. 5
Ryan Giggs - His calmness, experience and authority were vital for United. Tremendous energy and industry. 7
Nani - Remarkable recovery after gashed shin at Liverpool, but failed to inspire with his usual penetrative runs. 6
Javier Hernandez - Continued his scoring run with predatory finish on five minutes. Movement and pace caused anxiety. 7
Wayne Rooney - Excelled in a deeper role behind Hernandez, providing the assist for opener. Looks to have his mojo back. 8
