Sir Alex Ferguson has warned it is “frightening” that Lionel Messi can only get better.
The Manchester United manager said: “Players develop and start to mature when they reach 25 or so. We’ve seen that with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and others. But Messi has not even reached that age yet. It’s frightening what’s going to happen – he’s only 24!”
Meanwhile Ferguson is looking forward to adding two experienced internationals to his squad next season – Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher.
United captain Vidic is on target to return from his knee injury for the 2012-13 campaign, and Ferguson is hopeful that midfielder Fletcher, out of action with a bowel condition, will also be able to join pre-season training. Ferguson added: “Darren is coaching with the reserves and he’s going to start a programme quite soon to get his fitness up.
“The big push will be pre-season to try and get him back to the level he was at.”
