Manchester United are lining up a summer move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso.
The £10million-rated Portuguese international has been on Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar for several years.
And United scouts watched him once more in Sporting’s 2-1 Europa League loss at Everton on Tuesday – when he converted a late penalty to alter the balance of the tie.
Versatile Veloso. 23, can operate in central defence as well as a defensive midfield role. He began his career with Benfica before switching to their Lisbon rivals.
United assistant manager Mike Phelan told a Portuguese sports newspaper: “We know Veloso well, including from the time he played against us. He is an excellent midfielder, with great potential.”
United have previously signed Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani from Sporting, and Veloso is now tempted to follow.
Veloso’s dad Antonio was also a Portugal international.
