Manchester United ace Gary Neville is selling his country estate - just a week after a campaign by locals led to his plans for a Teletubbies-style eco home being thrown out.
Neville, 35, has now put his £6 million estate - dubbed Neville-Neville land - on the market after he was refused planning permission to build a new home on the grounds.
An campaign by residents in the Harwood hamlet of Bolton, Lancs, led councillors to reject his proposals for a new environmentally-friendly underground home.
He has now decided to sell up after buying the estate five years ago and building a state-of-the-art 22,500sq ft super home on its grounds.
The player was so keen to see his plans put through he and his wife attended the council meeting called to discuss them.
A source said: “Gary was desperately disappointed that councillors rejected his plans for the eco-home.
“It was his dream to build the environmentally-friendly house which he believed would have been one of the finest modern and green homes in the world.
“He is planning on re-submitting new plans and still wants to go ahead with the eco-home.
“But he has decided to sell the manor house.
“He really wants to gain permission to build the underground house for a new family home. He has been working on it for over two years.”
Neville had also clashed with neighbours while building the manor house.
The former England defender bought the estate in 2005 and after getting planning permission he transformed the run-down building and outbuildings into a stunning manor house which was finally completed two years ago.
Many locals complained about the size of the project and the number of construction vehicles on the site.
Neville was also left fuming after two Scousers who were working on the site buried a Liverpool scarf under his swimming pool.
He also had problems with the construction which was repeatedly halted because of building difficulties.
The house stands in 90 acres and has stunning panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
Estate agents Knight Frank describe it as the `most exceptional modern country estate in the north west’.
It has seven bedrooms and the lower ground floor houses a superb leisure suite with pool, gym, cinema and a games room.
The property is arranged over four floors with each floor having lift access. There is a superb wrap-around balcony and patio/terrace area.
It comes with a two bedroom detached cottage for staff and landscaped gardens - there is even a shrubbery which spells out ‘UNITED’.
