Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has reportedly made Michael Carrick his prime candidate to replace departing captain Lorik Cana.
The Black Cats skipper joined Galatasaray earlier this week - just a year after signing from Marseille in a £6m deal.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be open to offers for England midfielder Carrick, who has struggled to hold down a regular starting place at Old Trafford.
And Bruce has identified the 29 year-old as the perfect choice to both anchor Sunderland's midfield and also skipper his side to European qualification next term.
