Marseille got the defence of their Ligue 1 crown off to the worst possible start as they went down to a shock 2-1 loss at home to newly-promoted Caen.
Nicolas Seube gave last season's second division champions a surprise lead in the 52nd minute, but Mamadou Samassa brought OM level with 13 minutes remaining.
Youssef El Arabi's header four minutes from time restored Caen's advantage and made it an opening day to forget for Didier Deschamps side.
Lyon were forced to settle for a 0-0 as goalkeepers were on top in their goalless meeting with Monaco at Stade Gerland.
Paris St Germain got their season off to a positive start with a solid 3-1 victory over St Etienne at the Parc des Princes thanks to goals from Mevlut Erding, Stephane Sessegnon and Nene.
At Stade Abbe-Deschamps, Auxerre and Lorient emerged with honours even drawing 2-2 in a entertaining clash.
Issam Jemaa missed a last-minute penalty that would have salvaged a late point for Lens as they lost 2-1 to Nancy in a dramatic opening to their campaign.
Arles-Avignon were denied victory on their first appearance in the French top flight as Sochaux battled from a goal down to post a solid opening-day 2-1 victory, Jacques Faty netting the winner.
Elsewhere, Nice had to settle for a 0-0 draw in their opening Ligue 1 game against Valenciennes, while Daniel Braaten and Ricardo Paulo Machado found the net in a 2-0 victory for Toulouse over Brest.
