Martin O'Neill plans new Aston Villa deal for Gareth Barry

Martin O'Neill and Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner met Gareth Barry yesterday to take the first steps towards offering him a new deal to scare off Liverpool.
Boss O'Neill still hopes to tie skipper Barry to a long-term contract at Villa Park after rejecting a £10million bid from Liverpool earlier this month. But O'Neill knows he has a battle on his hands as the midfielder yesterday restated his ambitions to play Champions League football.
Barry, who has 18 England caps, is believed to have stopped short of asking to leave despite other interest from Chelsea and Arsenal.
