Kris Boyd helped Boro climb further away from the drop-zone with their first home win of the year at the Riverside.
The Scot put the Teessiders ahead with a sublime eighth-minute lob against Scunthorpe, who remain firmly in the bottom three.
Boyd grabbed his first goal in 10 games with a superb finish, latching on to Seb Hines’ ball and lobbing Josh Lillis from the edge of the area.
Local lad Tony McMahon grabbed Boro’s second direct from a curling free-kick 20 minutes from time to seal Tony Mowbray’s first home win since December 11.
Scunthorpe’s misery was completed when Abdi Ibrahim was sent off for his second booking.
