England goalkeeper David James turned his back on the Premier League yesterday by joining Bristol City.
James, 40 tomorrow, agreed a one-year deal with Steve Coppell’s Championship side and will make his debut against Millwall next weekend.
And he insists his England career is not over after snubbing Fulham, West Ham, Sunderland and Celtic following four years at Portsmouth.
James, who has the option of a further year with City, said: “I am not ready to stop playing for my country.
“I had offers to stay in the Premier League from some fantastic clubs but it is more important that I play football for the right club.
“The south-west has not had a club in the Premier League and that needs to change.”
Devon resident James will be introduced to the Bristol City fans before today’s friendly with Blackpool.
Coppell said: “David has got bags of experience. It is a great coup for the club.”
