Steve Bruce reckons English bosses are in a two season race for the England job - and he'd love to be a candidate.
The Sunderland boss says the likes of Premier League rivals Harry Redknapp, Roy Hodgson and Sam Allardyce will be looking for perfect timing with their clubs to land the top job at the Football Association.
Bruce was asked yesterday whether he wants to be a candidate for the England post that Fabio Capello will vacate in summer 2012, which also coincides with the end of his current deal at the Stadium of Light.
With ten years experience in the top flight, he could emerge as a strong candidate if Sunderland progress into the top eight.
Bruce said: "If I got offered the job or was even in the frame I would had done very good job here.
"Of course I would be interested but I very rarely try blow my own trumpet but I would love to have a go why not? If you are going to do it it must be proudest moment of your life even though we know what is entails, but still it would be absolutely wonderful."
The FA have already stated their next England coach will be English and Bruce added: "I agree it should go to an Englishman. I have total respect for the guy in the job now. He has an unbelievable record I didn't realise what he has won until I read it recently and it is staggering what he has done.
"But I always go back and can you think an Englishman would be managing Italy Spain or France?
"In an ideal world for me being an Englishman I would like to see and Englishman in charge of team. Whether it is patriotic I don't know. We have had some great English managers before so why not? We have some bad ones as well, mind."
Bruce says the intense pressure and demands of bossing England would be "worth it" adding: "Absolutely 100 per cent you have to have thick skin but coming up here you need it too.
"You have to try get to the top that is the way I have always striven whatever I have done and that has to be the highest accolade and it is how I do with this team over the next 18 months and that is what my aim will be.
"It is all about timing there might be a new kid on the block by then. It is about timing how well you do and your stock at the time."
