Roy Hodgson has been backed to bring success to Liverpool by former Reds boss Gerard Houllier.
Houllier famously won a treble with Liverpool in 2001 and feels his pal Hodgson is the right man to put some silverware in the Anfield trophy cabinet.
"I spoke briefly to Roy on Thursday night to congratulate him," said Houllier. "I didn't need to give him any advice. Liverpool is a big club with a big heart, where there is a special link between the people and the players and staff. I'm sure Roy is the ideal man to make it work.
"Obviously we need to know if any players will leave and who will come in, but Roy has a tradition of success and I'm sure he'll bring that at some stage.
"The competition is getting harder all the time but I know he is up for the challenge. He's a good choice for Liverpool, for the people and for the fans."
Houllier and Hodgson have been friends since the mid-80s when the former Inter Milan coach was a relative unknown working in Sweden.
Hodgson spent two weeks with Houllier, who was then Paris St Germain coach, 'brushing up his French' before taking on the Switzerland job.
Houllier said: "Roy is a great manager, a great man and a football man and I am sure the players will love him.
"He talks football, drinks football and has a great capacity to make teams work together. Wherever he has been across Europe, his teams have worked and played for each other and he has made his players improve.
"He is a man with great experience who attends all the big tournaments. He is very close to the people and all I can say is he is the right man for Liverpool."
