The return of top striker Demba Ba and new £9m signing Papiss Cisse from the Africa Cup of Nations can turn Newcastle’s season around.
The Toon Army go to Blackburn on Wednesday then face Aston Villa next Sunday and their boss Alan Pardew is hoping his new strike force will be back in time, along with Fabricio Coloccini who missed the FA Cup defeat at Brighton through injury.
Pardew said: “We’ve got a game on Wednesday night. We have to correct what’s wrong yet it’s hard to criticise my players because we had a good grip of the game and our balance and commitment was right.
“I’m not focusing on where we can go from here for the rest of the season because we knew this period would be difficult without big players at the Africa Nations. We’ve lost the core of this team. We knew they’d all be coming back for the next round so to lose in this game makes it all the more galling. I’ve no idea whether they will all be back for Wednesday. I hope so.
“We’ve got a big game at Blackburn, we need to get something against Villa then hopefully we can start looking upwards again.”
