Alan Pardew is opening up contract talks Joey Barton and Jose Enrique.
The Newcastle boss yesterday confirmed his interest in signing Cardiff and England striker Jay Bothroyd, and revealed his priority is keeping together the best of his existing squad.
Barton and Enrique have 18 months left on their deals, and Pardew is convinced both have a longer future at the club, despite being among the biggest earners.
Barton has been United’s chief play-maker this season and attracted interest from West Ham and Aston Villa. Enrique is United’s only specialist left back.
Pardew said: “Bothroyd is a player I admire.
“I has a meeting this week with the owner and we decided we want to keep the core of our squad together.
“It would be nice to bring someone in, but it is proving difficult. We have secured Steven Taylor. Barton and Enrique have 18 months left so they are the ones to look at next.”
