No Euro reprieve for England

England hopes of a back-door route to Euro 2008 evaporated yesterday when UEFA confirmed none of the games in the qualifying tournament were in their dossier of matches which may have been fixed.
European football's governing body revealed at the weekend they were helping Europol investigate games which may have been rigged for betting scams.
It was claimed 26 matches were involved, including some in the qualifying campaign for next summer's tournament, among them Croatia.
But UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said: "There's nothing at all from the European Championship. It's pure fantasy that it involved Croatia.
"There's no chance of England or Scotland having a back way into the finals."
