Paul Gascoigne risked his life to save a stranger in his horror car smash last month, he has revealed.
The football legend said he nearly died after he threw himself across the car to stop a fellow passenger flying through the windscreen.
The ex-England star said: “I saved his life and ended up coming off worse.”
Gazza, 43, was one of three passengers injured when a Vauxhall Astra crashed in Newcastle on June 13.
He told OK magazine: “I broke eight ribs, had a punctured lung and nearly lost an eye. The worst thing was someone stole my necklace as I lay injured.
“I’ve got more than nine lives that’s for sure. But people are giving me grief for this. I’m not taking the blame, because this time it wasn’t my fault.”
A 36-year-old woman was held on suspicion of drink driving after the car hit a lamppost and stone pillars outside the city’s Guildhall.
