QPR manager Paul Hart wants to make Gillingham hot shot Simeon Jackson his first signing.
Canada striker Jackson, 22, who has scored 13 goals this season, played under Hart when he was in charge of Rushden and Diamonds.
The £1.5million-rated Jackson has also been watched by Tottenham and Cardiff.
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson said: "If we get any offers in January it is up to the chairman to decide whether it is beneficial to the club."
