Plymouth 1-2 Blackpool: Liam Dickinson on fire for Pool
Published 00:00 01/12/08 By
Any doubts Derby boss Paul Jewell has over Liam Dickinson's ability to cut it in the Championship should have been lifted in four astonishing minutes at Home Park.
For while Jewell was watching his Rams being demolished 3-0 at Burnley, Dickinson - on loan to Blackpool - was coming off the bench to score twice, turning this dour clash on its head.
The Salford-born raider, 23, who cost Jewell £750,000 from Stockport last July, said: "I heard on the grapevine that Paul Jewell isn't sure if I can hack it in the Championship.
"This was my first match at this level and I was in the right place at the right time. Now I'm going to prove him wrong and get my spot back at Derby.
"I feel that I do have a future with the club, a big shout. He must have seen something in me when I was signed from Stockport in the summer.
"But I didn't have the best of times preseason. I lost a bit of confidence and the manager wanted me to go out and get some games and score some goals. I got six goals in 12 games on loan to Huddersfield and I've obviously started off very positively at Blackpool."
Trailing to a superb Paul Gallagher strike after the hour, Blackpool boss Simon Grayson introduced Dickinson, on loan Liverpool youngster Adam Hammill and David Fox for Steve Kabba, Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Lee Hendrie with 15 minutes remaining. It proved a master stroke.
Latching on to Ben Burgess' knock down, Dickinson rifled in a 78th minute leveller with his first touch. He followed up moments later with an opportunist near-post strike after Kyel Reid threaded the ball through.
Grayson reflected: "Liam took his chances really well. I wanted to sign the lad, but Derby beat us to him."
