Arsenal target Riccardo Montolivo has received death threats after refusing to renew his contract at Fiorentina.
The Viola directors have accused the midfield playmaker of misleading the club so he can leave on a Bosman at the end of the season. Fiorentina accepted a €10m bid from Roma in the summer but the player turned the move down as he seeks to move abroad.
Now police are investigating several messages posted on the 26-year-old's Facebook page.
Fiorentina chief executive Sandro Mencucci said: "The threats to Montolivo? I want to brand this behaviour as stupid. The threats were made a week ago by an imbecile. I want to close the discourse regarding Montolivo. We have said what we had to say."
