Police yesterday lost a £1million court battle over the matchday policing of a Premiership club.
Wigan Athletic had argued that Greater Manchester Police charged them for services outside their JJB Stadium during the 2003/4 and 2004/5 seasons which they had not requested.
The Appeal Court yesterday overturned a ruling made last year and ordered the force to pay Wigan £263,000 plus costs, which could top £1million.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, who owned JJB Sports, had claimed the club were targeted due to his wealth.
