Fulham midfielder Simon Davies is relishing the prospect of working under his former Wales manager Mark Hughes again.
And Davies his hoping Hughes might be able to use his Welsh influence to persuade Craig Bellamy to become his first signing at Craven Cottage.
Hughes took his seat in the Fratton Park directors’ box just before yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth to run the rule over his new squad, who were facing the south coast club in a testimonial for defender Linvoy Primus.
Davies said: “We met him today and on Monday he will start training and we will work on his ideas in the coming week.
“It will be difficult to emulate Roy [Hodgson] but I’m sure Mark will not look at it like that. It’s a new start for everyone. With a few additions I hope it will be exciting times.”
Davies added: “Craig Bellamy is a top player and would be a great addition. I’m sure he would do well but it is speculation at the moment so we won’t get too excited yet. If the manager can pull it off, I’m sure he will try.”
Striker Bobby Zamora missed a couple of good chances to impress Hughes after Marc Wilson’s clinical header from Matt Ritchie’s corner gave Pompey a winning lead.
