Portsmouth want Le Mans keeper Yohann Pele if David James quits for Tottenham.
Pompey expect James to follow former boss Harry Redknapp to Spurs next month and have identified Pele as his replacement.
Frenchman Pele could be a bargain buy as his deal is due to expire in the summer and he is refusing to sign a new contract.
The 26-year-old who also appeals to Arsenal and Spurs, said: "I am attracted by England."
But defender Lauren claims along with James, Jermain Defoe and Glen Johnson will also leave.
Lauren said: "The team is dismantling and big sides are coming. I am leaving in January as well."
