Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal was finally beaten on the clay at the French Open yesterday, ending his four-year winning streak at the Grand Slam tournament.
His winning run is mighty impressive and certainly ranks highly alongside winning streaks in other sports. Here's our pick of the best all-time winning streaks.
1. The longest winning streak in any professional sport arguably belongs to Pakistani squash player Jahangir Khan who won a ridiculous 555 consecutive games between 1981 and 1986.
2. The longest winning streak currently on-going belongs to wheelchair tennis player Esther Vergeer. The Dutchwoman is on a 354-game winning streak, which began in 2003 and includes a streak of 250 consecutive sets won.
3. Team sport winning streaks are harder to build up than those in individual sports, especially when draws are a likely outcome in any game. In Test cricket, for example, more than 25 per cent of matches end in a draw, but that didn't stop the Aussies winning 16 consecutive Tests between 1999 and 2001. The streak started with a 10 wicket victory over Zimbabwe and ended when they lost to India by 171 runs.
4. The Premier League's winning streak record belongs to Arsenal who between Feb 10, 2002 and Aug, 18, 2002 won 14 games in a row. Arsenal also hold the record for the Premier League's longest unbeaten run, this lasted 49 games and almost six months.
5. American athlete Ed Moses holds the record for the most consecutive wins in any track and field event. He ruled the roost over the 400m hurdles for a decade, winning 122 straight races between 1977 and 1987.
6. Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez holds a remarkable career record. He recorded 88 straight professional wins in the ring during a run which lasted several years. British boxer Joe Calzaghe, meanwhile, has won all 46 of his fights, but is unlikely to come close to Chavez' record as retirement looms large for the Welshman.
7. The Undertaker boasts the most wins at Wrestlemania, the WWE's annual grappling jamboree, with a win-loss record of 17-0 in appearances since 1991. Unsubstantiated rumours have it that Sid Eudy, his opponent at Wrestlemania 13, defecated in his tights during the match.
8. In 1995 Puerto Rican thoroughbred Camarero made history when he won his 55th consecutive horse race to break a 19th-century record. The record chase began two years earlier, and such is the feat of the horse that the annual Camarero Awards are given to Puerto Rico's champion racehorses.
9. Rafa Nadal may have been defeated at Roland Garros but he's still the proud owner of the record for the longest winning streak on clay courts (81 matches). On grass, the men's record is held by Roger Federer (65 matches), while Ivan Lendl holds the record for the longest winning streak on indoor courts (66 matches).
10. It may not seem like a great winning streak, but five wins in a row is massive when it comes to the Olympics. In winning five consecutive gold medals, British rower Steve Redgrave was unbeaten at the Olympics for 16 years (or 20 years if you count the four years between his final gold medal and the following Olympic Games), which is a great achievement in anyone's book.
