Reading boss Brian McDermott is in the middle of a tug of war between managerless Wolves and Russian billionaire Anton Zingarevich.
McDermott is wanted by Wolves to replace Mick McCarthy, sacked last week as they slipped into the Premier League’s bottom three.
Reading owner Zingarevich refused Wolves permission to speak to his manager and the only way they would now be able to get their man is if the Royals boss says he would like to talk with them.
Wolves would only need to shell out £500,000 in compensation as McDermott is on a rolling 12-month contract although they will reward the 50-year-old with a lucrative new four year deal.
They will also back him with a sizeable transfer chest – regardless of whether they go up or not this season.
Wolves are also looking at Brighton’s Gus Poyet, although he will cost about £2million in compensation. Poyet has been given permission to speak to Wolves - but a £2million compensation package could price him out of leaving Brighton.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey is keen on Poyet who has done an impressive job at Brighton after guiding them into the Championship.
They asked for permission to speak to Poyet and that has been granted but it remains to be seen if they pursue it further because of the £2m release clause.
