Richard Dunne's multi-million-pound pay-off from Manchester City was negotiated by his wife.
While football agents are often seen as driving the hardest bargains for their clients, there was no doubting Helen Dunne’s determination to ensure her husband was well looked after as he headed towards a £6million deadline move to Aston Villa.
The Dunnes and their advisers were aware the City skipper qualified for a testimonial next year to mark a decade of service. And he was due a loyalty payment because he had not demanded a transfer.
The Republic of Ireland international has been popular with City fans, so when he was being sold in the wake of Joleon Lescott’s £24m recruitment his wife Helen wanted the best possible deal for her man.
Chris Farnell, the respected sports lawyer, has been advising the Dunnes but wife Helen was present for the critical meeting with City officials that finally led to his move to the Midlands.
Club insiders believe she asked for a £6m farewell payment for her husband. City rejected that request but Helen did manage to land a £2m farewell gift.
