Rio Ferdinand is set to be named as the England captain for the 2010 World Cup campaign.
England coach Fabio Capello has narrowed his selection process for a long-term skipper down to two players - Ferdinand and his centre-back partner John Terry.
The Manchester United defender has impressed Capello during a recent trial period as captain. Capello has told friends Ferdinand has been excellent.
Chelsea skipper Terry was given the armband by former coach Steve McClaren.
Privately, Terry is preparing to lose the role to his pal Ferdinand.
Capello has been keen to make a complete break from the McClaren era - in his squad selection and captaincy. That also pushes Ferdinand into the lead.
Capello always insisted a long-term skipper would be in place by the time England opened their World Cup campaign away to Andorra on September 6.
It's likely Ferdinand will be installed by the time England face the Czech Republic in a Wembley friendly in 10 days' time.
