Triumphant Roberto Di Matteo is still only third choice to be next Chelsea boss.
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola and Germany’s Joachim Loew are believed to be ahead of him on owner Roman Abramovich’s wishlist, despite caretaker Di Matteo (above) guiding the Blues to the Champions League final.
Guardiola has pledged to tell Nou Camp president Sandro Rossell within the next 72 hours if he plans to stay for a fourth season at Barca.
If not, Abramovich is poised to do everything he can to lure the architect of the best footballing side on the planet in to Stamford Bridge.
Di Matteo will lead out Chelsea at the final in Munich on May 19 not knowing if he will even be at the club next season.
Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “Robbie has done a fantastic job but we will stick to our word and wait until the end of the season.
“We’ll take it one game at a time and see where we are. That’s best for everyone. We’ve a number of big games before the Champions League final.”
Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola believes Di Matteo should be given a chance. He said: “Robbie is a friend but I say he deserves the job because of what he’s done on the pitch – that’s been quite remarkable.”
