Roberto Martinez refuses to blame Wigan defeat on Marlon King

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez refused to blame a traumatic week off the pitch for the hammering.
He said: "It would be easy to use (Marlon King's jailing) as an excuse and say that was the reason for this display. But our standards have been too high to perform like we did on the ball.
“The desire and the effort was there, but we gave the ball away too cheaply in important positions, and Portsmouth always had the intensity in their play. So this had nothing to do with what has been going on outside (off) the pitch.
“Although Portsmouth have had problems surrounding them, they played in a way that showed they wanted to win, and they did really well. It shows you that what happens in the dressing room is important. You need to be focused and perform with the standard that we had shown so far this season.
“Some parts of that interview were made up, and that is something that we will be seeking advice on. We will take it how we can. But overall it is important that whatever happens off the field, on the field we all know our jobs.
"The clear example is Portsmouth. With all their instability and bad headlines they still can turn out and perform the way they did today, so that is a clear example that in football all that matters is on the pitch."
