Owen Coyle will wrap up a deal for Real Madrid starlet Marcos Alonso this week - and has refused to rule out a swoop for David Nugent.
Coyle thinks left back Alonso, 19, is a red-hot prospect and is excited at the prospect of the £1.6 million deal.
He is also keen to add another striker and may move for Nugent, who played for him at Burnley last season.
Coyle said: "We're close to tying the deal up for Marcos. He's an exciting young player and he was on the Real Madrid bench last season.
"He'll bring energy, liveliness and quality and if and when it's done we've got a very exciting prospect on our hands.
"There's been no contact with Portsmouth but we all know David Nugent's a very good player and I've enjoyed working with him before."
Robbie Blake put Bolton ahead with a first-half penalty only for Chris O'Grady's thumping effort to earn a draw and boss Keith Hill has told Middlesbrough they will have to pay up if they want defender Craig Dawson.
Hill said: "He's a Premier League player, never mind a Championship player. People need to be brave enough to match valuations."
