Roy Keane will agree a new £10million deal next month to stay at Sunderland until 2012.
Keane is in the final year of a three-year contract and will finalise the deal with chairman Niall Quinn once the August transfer window has closed.
A club insider said: "It's as good as a done deal. Keane is happy and is now ready to commit his future to the club.
"He didn't want anything to take the focus off his recruitment drive, but now he's got the men he wanted talks can start."
The main issue still to be settled is whether Keane signs for three or four years.
Quinn wants him for four, but understands Keane (right) may wish to keep his options open in the event the Manchester United job becomes available.
