Giggs: We don't need to keep up with City spending

Ryan Giggs insists there is no need for a marquee signing to bring the Premier League title back to Manchester United.
In stark contrast to neighbours Manchester City, United have spent only £20million this summer — on Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez.
David Silva, Yaya Toure, Jerome Boateng and Aleksander Kolarov have all ended up at Eastlands and the Reds’ failure to bring in a big name has frustrated fans — some of whom blame the financial situation under club owners the Glazers.
But Welsh veteran Giggs believes United can become champions for a record-breaking 19th time without having to reel in a top star.
Giggs, 36, said: “We don’t need a marquee signing before the deadline.
“We’re OK at the moment. The quality of the players we’ve got is very good. And we’ve got players coming back from injuries.
“We’ve also got young players who’ve gone out on loan and have come back stronger, fitter and will have benefited greatly from our pre-season tour of America.”
Along with Paul Scholes, David Beckham, the Neville brothers and Nicky Butt, Giggs was part of the extraordinary generation of young players who broke through in the 1990s.
This season is a huge one for the new crop of kids — the likes of Jonny Evans, Fabio and Rafael Da Silva, Darron Gibson, Nani, Federico Macheda, Danny Welbeck and new boy Smalling.
Giggs is fully aware that players like Jonathon Spector, David Bellion, Kieran Richardson, Eric Djemba-Djemba, Chris Eagles and Tim Howard all had their chance to shine — but failed to make the grade.
Along with Gary Neville and Scholes, Giggs is entering what could be his final season and he challenged the new kids on the block to prove they have the mettle to be the future of United.
He added: “On the pre-season tour we showed the young talent that was there.
“We’ve now got to build on that.
“They have set the standards and they’ll have to keep to that now. And I think they will, because their attitude is right. They train right and they prepare right.
“But we know we’ve got the talent here.
“Now we need to see if they’ve got the mental character to play for Manchester United.”
Giggs is about to begin his 21st season at Old Trafford — and is desperate to win his 11th Premier League title.
He said: “I don’t think about setting records for how many titles I can get as a player.
“That will be something I look back upon and be proud of when I finish.
“At the moment I’m just looking forward.”
