Sam Allardyce wants to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy in a swoop on Real Madrid.
The Blackburn boss said: "It would be a major coup. I did that a few years ago with Nicolas Anelka at Bolton and his goals took us up to the next level.
"Who would have thought Bolton would get Anelka? Nobody did. But I went out and did it. It would be nice to do it with a Van Nistelrooy. I don't know, though. "It was hugely difficult then with Anelka, but it's much more difficult now."
The former Manchester United goal machine has been told he can quit the Bernabeu.
The Blackburn boss is armed with s18million from the sales of Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire, and feels signing Van Nistelrooy, who is 33 on Wednesday, would guarantee success. "I want to talk to him, although I've not enquired after him yet," said Big Sam.
"We wouldn't be able to match his salary at Real, even if there was no transfer fee involved. But maybe he wants to come and play in England again and take less of a salary. If he does, we'd be interested."
