Thomas Schaaf bemoaned his side's lack of cutting edge as Werder Bremen were held to a goalless draw at Cologne.
The result lifted Bremen back up to second in the table, albeit with a deficit of three points on league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who can now wrap up the unofficial title of winter champions with a win over Hertha Berlin on Friday night.
"We have got to live with this point because we were unable to conclude everything that we created so well," said Schaaf.
"We played the ball around well, created good openings, but lacked the incision.
"We did well but not well enough to leave the field victorious."
Cologne coach Zvonimir Soldo was far more satisfied with the result, which was a point gained for the Bundesliga strugglers.
"That was a step forwards for us," he said. "We had two or three chances against a very strong opponent and we can be happy with a point."
Cologne established a two-point cushion over the bottom three with their second successive draw and they will now look to draw level with Freiburg by beating them in the Black Forest next Saturday.
