Ipswich overcame a dismal first-half showing to maintain their unbeaten away record in the Championship.
The high-flying Tractor Boys were totally outplayed by Scunthorpe early on and fell behind to David Mirfin’s looping header.
But substitute Jaime Peters pounced 12 minutes into the second half and Ipswich saw several chances go begging as they piled forward.
Ian Baraclough, in his first game as Scunthorpe’s full-time boss, having been given the job permanently in midweek, saw his side threaten to snatch a second goal in an enthralling finish.
Scunthorpe dominated early on but Jonathan Forte headed Eddie Nolan’s cross over before Rob Jones beat Marton Fulop to a Josh Wright corner but headed narrowly wide.
The Iron were rewarded when Sam Togwell lifted a long ball into the area and Mirfin nodded over Fulop.
Manager Roy Keane, clearly unimpressed by Ipswich’s showing, replaced highly-rated teenage forward Connor Wickham with midfielder Luke Hyam.
The ineffective Andros Townsend made way at the break for Peters, who took just 12 minutes to make an impact.
Cliff Byrne’s attempted interception cannoned off Peters, leaving the winger with an easy finish.
The goal roused Ipswich and Joe Murphy made a fine stop to deny Carlos Edwards and only Byrne’s superb last-ditch tackle stopped Jason Scotland converting the rebound.
Darren O’Dea hit the bar then Jones cleared a Peters header off the line.
Scunthorpe had chances of their own and Forte was first denied by a combination of Gareth McAuley’s challenge and Fulop’s fingertip save before dragging a shot wide of the target.
