Fernando Torres showed he'll not be suffering from any Euro 2008 hangover this season.
The man who inspired Spain to become European Champions in June returned to Premier League action in impressive style at the Stadium of Light.
He scored the winner with eight minutes remaining and Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez said: "Torres is a key player and he can change games. For the team, it's really important to have these sorts of players." Sunderland showed real passion and commitment as they attempted to put the visitors under pressure..
And after the political turmoil that has engulfed Anfield in recent weeks boss Benitez was happy to get back to football.
He said: "We want to concentrate on winning - that's the best news for our supporters.
"In the first half, Sunderland attacked. In the second, we were on top - you could see the team was really focused."
