Sunderland line up £10million move for Celtic star McGeady

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce will make a £10million summer move for Celtic winger Aidan McGeady after missing out on Middlesbrough’s Adam Johnson.
Bruce is hoping to succeed where one of his former clubs Birmingham failed on transfer deadline day by persuading Hoops boss Tony Mowbray to part with the much-coveted Republic of Ireland winger.
Mowbray insisted in January that McGeady wasn’t for sale, but that could change in the close season as Mowbray looks to raise funds for an ambitious rebuilding programme.
Bruce is determined to improve the Black Cats quality in the wide midfield positions and had tracked Sunderland-born Johnson all season. He had been optimistic about landing Johnson, personally running the rule over him eight days ago in Middlesbrough’s 0-0 draw with Bristol City.
But he couldn’t compete with moneybags Manchester City. They paid £6m for the England Under-21 international, whose Riverside contract was up in June.
Bruce was also interested in taking McGeady’s Republic of Ireland colleague Robbie Keane on loan last week, but was beaten to the punch by Mowbray.
Keane insisted that the only club he wanted to join was Celtic and that killed off interest from Sunderland, Wolves, West Ham and Turkish outfit Galatasaray.
Bruce has also told Lee Cattermole his England day will come if he’s patient.
The England Under-21 midfielder’s knee ligament problems cost him any remote chance of a World Cup trip this summer.
But Bruce believes he will be a contender for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
He said: “I’ve got a lot of respect for Catts. He’s still only 21. If he keeps his head down, he’ll have a wonderful career.
“Who knows what may happen in four years’ time?”
