Sunderland have suspended Titus Bramble over an alleged sex attack and drug possession.
The £40,000-a-week defender is on police bail following claims that he assaulted a woman in the back of a cab.
Sunderland club boss Steve Bruce is said to be “exasperated” by his 30-year-old defender’s arrest, which means he will miss the Black Cats’ home game against West Brom on Saturday.
A club source said: “Titus is convinced this will not go further. He has assured club bosses he will be cleared of any wrongdoing and is protesting his innocence. But Bruce not only feels let down, he is exasperated.”
Bramble, 30, was driven to a Stockton-on-Tees police station by a taxi driver who picked up the player and a woman from a nearby club at 2.30am on Wednesday.
What is believed to be a Class A drug was allegedly found during a search. On Monday, he was made fans’ Man of the Match in Sunderland’s 2-1 defeat by Norwich.
The club said: “Titus Bramble has been suspended from duties, pending a club investigation. He will not attend training or be available for matches.”
