Harry Redknapp is making a new £2million bid to bring his old pal David James to high-flying Tottenham - and take advantage of Portsmouth's financial headaches.
Spurs chief Redknapp managed James at Pompey and wants to add the England veteran to his side and could even snap him up this weekend as the south-coast club sort out the mess caused by their takeover talks.
Redknapp is more determined than ever to do the deal after Brazilian Heurelho Gomes showed his fragile nature by hobbling off in the thumping win at Hull.
And Redknapp will offer straight cash for James, which would give Portsmouth a badly-needed and timely injection of funds amid their current troubles.
Pompey do not want to lose James, but know he is now growing unsettled and nervous about his England World Cup place. His wages will also be a drain to their potential new backers.
The stricken Fratton Park outfit signed Finnish veteran Antti Niemi to cover for James but he has aggravated an old elbow problem and is about to undergo a second operation that could rule him out for weeks.
Redknapp wants James immediately but may be willing to wait for a couple of weeks if he is given assurances that the deal will happen.
Gomes' injury scare brought his need for a top-line keeper into focus. He has remarkably kept his place this season but Redknapp knows he needs a more reliable No.1 to fulfil Tottenham's ambitions.
