Tottenham star Benoit Assou-Ekotto facing police probe after fan clash

Tottenham defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto was last night under police investigation after his amazing bust-up with a fan.
The Metropolitan Police yesterday launched an inquiry, after the incident at the end of Spurs' home defeat to Wolves was reported to them.
Assou-Ekotto confronted the fan as the players left the pitch after the final whistle and it could now land him in trouble with the police and the Football Association.
It appeared that a fan, sat near the touchline where Assou-Ekoto was playing in the second half, shouted something at the left-back.
Assou-Ekotto then went for the fan, tried to grab him, and appeared to get him by the throat before the incident was broken up by the stewards.
The fan made a complaint to stewards and match day staff and the matter was then referred to the police yesterday.
A police spokesperson said: “The police are investigating an allegation of assault following yesterday’s Spurs-Wolves Premier League match at White Hart Lane. There have been no arrests.”
An FA spokesman said: “We are obviously aware of the reports and will await the referee’s own report tomorrow before talking to the club and the police.”
But the FA are unlikely to take any action until the police have concluded their own investigation.
Former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona famously kung-fu kicked a fan at Crystal Palace and received a lengthy ban.
Assou-Ekotto was investigated but not charged after another bust-up during a tournament in France.
MirrorSport tried to talk to the fan as he left the ground but the stewards ushered the man - who looked to be in his 20s and wearing a Spurs shirt - out of the ground and even walked him away down the street.
Tottenham were anxious to play down the incident afterwards but, with the police now involved, it could mean serious trouble for Assou-Ekotto.
