AC Milan plan to use Klaas Jan Huntelaar as bait to land Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic.
The wantaway Vidic is set to quit United in the summer and Milan are putting together a cash-plus-Huntelaar deal to rival Real Madrid in the race for his signature.
They see the Serbian centre-half, whose wife is unhappy in Manchester, as the ideal long-term replacement for the ageing Alessandro Nesta and feel he could be attracted by a move to the San Siro.
Milan believe Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in Huntelaar and they would be happy to sell the striker to United just 12 months after buying him from Real for £14million.
The Dutch international has been unable to win a regular place in Leonardo's Milan side and has managed just five goals in 15 appearances.
United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar backed his former Holland team-mate, despite his problems this season and says he is still a fine striker.
"I played with Klaas for two or three years with the national team and he's a great goalscorer," he said.
"He's a guy who can hold the ball up well, like we saw in Milan's game against Udinese on Friday.
"When he gets a chance, he can finish it and you always have to pay attention to him when you're up against him.
"He had a hard time at Madrid and he hasn't started a lot of games for Milan, but he can still be a great player."
